pitch improvement work underway
Jets may have won awards for their ground in the last two years, but it did not take long for the work to begin to make sure we are ready for 2009-10. No sooner had the last match been played last Friday night, and the equipment started to roll in to seed and repair the pitch for next season. Now the seed is down, John Elliott is ready to start his rain dance.

ROYSTON FIGHT BACK TO TAKE THE CUP
JETS 1 ROYSTON TOWN 2
Spartan South Midlands Floodlit Cup Final
16th May 2009
Jets missed out on the opportunity to end the season on a high by taking the Spartan Floodlight Cup when Royston came back from being 1-0 down at half-time to win the final 2-1.
Royston had the best of the opening few minutes with Luke Robins immediately looking like he was going to be hard to control down their left hand side.
Jets first chance came on 4 minutes when an opportunity fell to Jamie Arthur but he was unable to get his shot away. Then, on 7 minutes Jets took the lead with their second chance of the game. From a throw-in near the corner flag, Jets crossed the ball in, and Ian Bywater was on hand to loop his header beyond Royston ‘keeper Williamson. 1-0 Jets
Royston almost drew level immediately, charging down their left side, with Robins firing in a dangerous cross that needed a strong saving tackle from Chris Ingham to deny them.
Royston were applying pressure, and another cross in from the left on 11 minutes was headed well wide by centre forward Craig Hammond when he should have done better.
Jets then countered with a great ball from Colin Jenkins to Jamie Arthur on the right flank. Jamie outpaced his marker and put in a great cross for Tim O’Mara. Royston managed to force Tim wide and his final shot was well held by the ‘keeper.
On 17 minutes, Royston again got a good cross in from the left, this time from Jan Stephens, but again Hammond headed well wide off a deflection. From the corner, Town’s Greg Jackson fired over from 20 yards.
Jets again caught Royston out with their pace on 19 minutes, Marc Ayes sending a long ball down the flank for Arthur to chase. Again Arthur’s speed got him to the ball first, and his whipped in cross gave Paul Turner an opportunity with the Royston ‘keeper wrong-footed, but the effort went wide.
Royston again went close from a corner on 22 minutes, Ryan Lockett shooting just wide from 25 yards.
In In an open game, Jets were holding their own against Royston and chances continued to fall for both sides. Paul Turner latched onto a mistake by Town’s Greg Jackson on 27 minutes and fired in a shot that needed to be deflected away for a corner. From the corner, the ball went straight across the goal, after a defensive miss kick but nobody was able to apply the finishing touch.
Then it was Royston’s turn to apply some pressure. First of all, Steve Duce was relieved to collect an awkward cross at the 2nd attempt, and another Town 25 yard strike needed a good block away for a corner by Chris Ingham. From the corner, Jets were lucky to escape when Royston headed over from within the 6 yard box.
The final 10 minutes of the first half belonged to Jets and this is where they could, and perhaps should, have put the game beyond Royston. On 36 minutes a strong left foot shot from Jamie Arthur forced a good save from the Town ‘keeper. Then on 42 minutes a great pull down from Paul Turner gave Jamie Arthur a good opportunity but the shot was pulled wide. On 43 minutes, another chance came and went, Tim O’Mara picking up the loose ball in the centre circle and setting Jamie Arthur free on goal, but the shot was just wide. Half Time 1-0 Jets.
Royston came out fired up, but the first chance fell to Jets. Jets won a corner after some good work by Tim O’Mara out wide. A great ball in came to Jamie Arthur who beat his man and put a strong ball into the 6 yard line which needed to be put over the bar by a Town defender for another corner.
Royston then began to take charge of the game. Luke Robins, who had been well contained by Ian Bywater in the first half, moved inside and started to control the midfield. Also, after a quiet first half, centre forward Craig Hammond looked a different player and almost came up with the equaliser with a header across the goal on 52 minutes.
It was no surprise when Royston levelled the scores a couple of minutes later with Lewis Endacott joining the attack to fire home. Royston continued to push forward and created more chances, but Steve Duce made a couple of good saves to keep the scores level.
Jets were holding on but nearly retook the lead against the run of play when, on 66 minutes, a long ball through from Ian Bywater was deflected away for a corner from which Marc Ayres headed narrowly over.
In a game that was looking like it was “next goal wins it” Royston came up with the winner on 68 minutes when, after a missed tackle, Greg Jackson fired home impressively from 20 yards out.
Jets did get the ball in the net on 72 minutes when, after Jets best build up of the second half, the ball was pushed through to Jamie Arthur, who slotted home but he was ruled a yard offside.
Jets tried to change things in midfield with Dave Maynard and Lewis Putnam being brought on for the final 15 minutes, but Royston remained in control.
Jets went down to 10 men on 78 minutes when, after some good play between Dave Maynard and Jamie Arthur, Arthur was bundled down in the box and might have been given a penalty, but was then given a straight red for an incident after the ball had been cleared.
Royston looked to finish things off, Luke Robins going close from 30 yards out on 79 minutes, and then it needed some good work from Marc Ayres to dispossess the same player a minute later.
Jets were still looking for that one chance that could draw them level. The closest they came was on 88 minutes when Chris Ingham, moved forward with the ball, pulled inside and shot from 20 yards out, but it was well covered by Royston.
Finally, on 90 minutes, it looked like Craig Hammond had sealed the win, stretching the Jets defence and firing in across goal but, with Duce beaten, the ball came back out off the post. Jets 10-men could not, however, create another chance in stoppage time as Royston held out for the win. 2-1 Royston.
Jets MOM was Ian Bywater for a strong performance in defence, particularly in the first half where he contained Robins well. Nathan Roberts was also strong and solid in defence. Royston’s Craig Hammond’s powerful second half performance was a strong factor in their comeback, but MOM honours should go to Luke Robins who always looked dangerous, and took control of the midfield in the second half.
