GLADDY GETS HIS HEAD STUCK IN THE VASE
LONDON APSA 1 JETS 3
F.A. Vase First QualifyingRound
6th September 2008
Wayne Gladdy had to book an appointment at his hairdresser’s after a rare headed goal against APSA in a performance where he was voted the MMMOM (Moaners Mount Man of the Match).
Jets were slightly disappointed with their 1st half performance, struggling to get their normal passing game going as the lively APSA worked hard for each other. 3 times in the first half hour Kevin Paul was called upon to make good point blank saves.
Jets then had a let-off on the half hour when the loose ball, after another Kevin Paul save, was put into the net only for both the referee and assistant to signal for a foul on the ‘keeper.
Then, when the game looked to be stuttering to a 0-0 HT score line, Jets came alive. First of all Jamie Arthur produced a superb cross from near the corner flag which was met by Wayne Gladdy who powerfully headed home (yes, you read it right - “headed”) to give Jets the lead with his 1st competitive goal of the season.
Then, just a minute later Jets completed a 1-2 when O’Mara and Arthur combined well, creating a chance for Nathan Roberts to hammer home from 25 yards to put Jets firmly in the driving seat. APSA worked hard to get back in the game but they looked as though they knew it was going to be an uphill task.
There was a distinct lack of excitement to the first 20 mins of the 2nd half. Jets should have made the game completely safe by then, but chances were missed and, in the 69th minute Jets were to pay for their complacency when Ruel Sandiford shot APSA back into the game.
At 2-1 it could have been an uncomfortable final 20 mins for Jets, but the team regained its composure and after some good work from Paul Turner and Wayne Gladdy, who were both outstanding, Tim O’Mara had the opportunity to cross. Tim put in a peach of a cross which enabled Jamie Arthur to finish with a side-foot into an empty net.
At 3-1 the job was done. Paul Turner was substituted and last seen running across the car park to try and make a pre scheduled meeting in Birmingham. MMMOM Wayne Gladdy was also taken off with aching limbs and clearly feeling the effects of his “high octane” midfield role, and looked to be in search of an oxygen cylinder. The 3rd Jets substitution was for “Old Father Time” Colin Jenkins who was nursing a leg injury.
Although not a vintage Jets performance, it was enough to deserve the win and to earn a place in the 1st Round proper, at home to Sileby Rangers on Sat 20th September.

A mid week game with St Margaretsbury as the visitors for the Jets. A tough fixture was envisaged, but this event turned out to be a scrappy affair with both sides failing to score on many visits into the opponent’s area.
The Jets were mainly on top, but did not play to their potential and it was in the 22nd minute that found one attack entering the St Margaretsbury six yard box to find, no other than Ian Holdom waiting to add yet one more goal to his tally and open the Jets account at 1-0. This score line was to hold until the break.
The second half found the none productive play continuing as the chances made were squandered by both sides. Substitutes were introduced into the game by the Jets and for a good spell the Jets were looking the most likely to change the score. The time was running out for any further goals when in the 80th minute the Jets made their final substitution with Owen Beamer, who wasted no time in making his mark when in the 86th minute he saw a well struck shot enter the St Margaretsbury net and close the evening’s score 2-0 to the Jets.
